Breaking News: It’s Official! Rep. Dan Carter Declares His Candidacy for the U.S. Senate
CT State Representative Dan Carter officially announced his candidacy for U.S. Senate today at approximately 12 noon in Veteran’s Park in Hartford, CT.
CT State Representative Dan Carter’s speech, April 4, 2016:
“Good Morning.
“First, let me thank my fellow legislators for joining me here this morning. And to my other friends, supporters and the members of the Press, thank you for being here with me today. This is a special day.
“I grew up in a normal middle class household where my mother and father were both in professions of service to others. My parents instilled in my brother and me all the beliefs and values of America; A commitment to family and community, a love of country, and a belief that nothing is guaranteed, but with hard work and determination you can succeed. These are beliefs and values that I still have to this day.
“I pass along these values to my children by my example.
“I have served my country and communities, as an Eagle Scout, in military service and in the Connecticut State Legislature. I have worked to advance our neighborhoods, communities, and state by proposing ideas that work, and rejecting ideas rooted in political cronyism.
“These are difficult times in which we live. We see companies flee from Connecticut, and our country. Our friends and neighbors are losing jobs, leaving many of them unable to ensure their children have the same opportunities that their parents worked so hard to give them. Meanwhile, our government seems deaf to our calls for help. We see our brave men and women going off to all corners of the world to fight for freedom against an enemy that wears no uniform and engages in barbaric acts too obscene for even a modern day horror movie. We see our healthcare system struggling to stay afloat because of government regulation, forcing cuts to services for the most vulnerable. And, we see our children leaving college struggling to find jobs, with crushing debt they may never be able to pay, and a future that may be dimmed.
“Yet, like many times before, we are left with a choice. Do we go the way of other great countries and fall by the wayside in history? Or do we continue to advance the American dream for centuries yet to come.
“We should never flinch in the face of adversity.
“Rather we need to meet it head on and assert the principals of this great nation – both when it was founded and today.
“So, I choose to stand strong and firm. I choose to make decisions to rebuild our economy. I choose to fight and resist terrorism and brutality. I choose help America be the place where everyone has the opportunity to succeed and leads the world by example.
“Senator Dick Blumenthal has had close to 40 years to prove himself, including 6 in the U.S. Senate. Unfortunately, while our economy has been decimated, Dick didn’t lift a finger to help. In fact, his legacy from suing companies, like many other antibusiness efforts, has helped bring our economy to its knees. While Islamic killers terrorize western allies, Dick talks about the perils of Astro turf; while real estate prices continue to crater, Dick talks about genetically altered salmon and while Connecticut’s mass transit system needs some of our tax dollar back to repair them, Dick Blumenthal is worried about legroom on jetliners.
“As of today I am declaring my candidacy for the US Senate from Connecticut.
“I know this will not be an easy race. Nothing worth doing in life ever is. The stakes for Connecticut and America are much too high for this to be a trivial endeavor or be trivialized by those in office today.
“This should and will be a hard fought effort – based on facts and tenacity.
“I will offer Connecticut a clear choice – a choice between our future and the sad sorry clichés of the past. We can no longer afford to have the political elite represent us. Today I ask those within the sound of my voice, and beyond, to join me in a call to action.
“This is about who can best lead forward.
“I am proud and happy to be child of the middle class, who knows where he comes from. I was honored to serve my country in the United States Air Force. I was also privileged to be selected by my community to be their voice in Hartford. Today, I stand before you to as a proud son, father, and American, who is thankful for the opportunity to continue this journey to Washington DC.
“With honesty and hard work, I look forward to earning your trust and your vote on November 8th.
