Breaking News: Florida School Shooting; Multiple Fatalities; 14 Sent to Hospital; Suspect in Custody

A school shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida today after a fire alarm went off at approximately 2:30 p.m.   There are multiple fatalities and injuries.

“It’s just catastrophic,” Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel says of shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. “There really are no words.” CBS News Twitter post.

At least 14 people were transported to the hospital with varying degrees of injuries, said the Broward Sheriff’s Department. “Multiple people were killed,” reports CBS News, that Sheriff Scott Israel said.

“CBS News has confirmed that the suspect has been identified as Nicholas Cruz, 19,” CBS News reports. “At one time” the suspect attended the school but was no longer enrolled, CBS reports, and was taken into custody without incident, Israel said.

Multiple SWAT teams are clearing the school building to make sure there are no other shooters, Sheriff Scott Israel said.

It appears that the shooter pulled the fire alarm first, in the Parkland Florida high school, to cause chaos, then began shooting, reports CBS News.

This is the 17th school shooting in 2018,out of only 45 days in.

NBC just reported 17 dead, over 20 injured.

UPDATE 8:01AM EDT 1-15-18

The Broward County Jail released the arrest information for suspected Parkland gunman Nikolas Cruz.

The 19-year-old suspect is charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder.
