Breaking News: 11 Police Officers Shot, 4 Dead, During a ‘Black Lives Matter’ Protest in Dallas, Texas
Minutes before 9:00 p.m. Central Time, Thursday, July 7, 2016, gunshots began and 11 Dallas Police Officers were shot (3 from the Dallas Police, 1 from the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Police), 4 fatal, 2 are in surgery and 3 are in critical condition, NBC News reports. A civilian was also wounded, authorities said, in the report.
It is believed 2 snipers started shooting Dallas Police Officers from an elevated positions, according to Dallas Police Chief David Brown, NBC reports. He described the shootings as “ambush style,” the report says.
The snipers drove up in a black SUV, and “got out and were wildly shooting,” a witness Ismael DeJesus said on CNN. One officer tried shooting the sniper in the back but it had no effect, then the sniper shot the officer, DeJesus said. He thought they had yo be wearing protective gear, he said.

“We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches in garages in the downtown area, and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown said at a news conference, NBC reports.
There was a tweet from the Dallas Police confirming the death of the fourth officer. They also mention a “person of interest, whose picture was circulated, who has turned himself in.
“Another alleged suspect was in a shootout with Dallas SWAT officers. That suspect is also in custody,” the tweet reads. They fear there could be more snipers. “It remains an active-shooter situation. Police have asked everyone to get to safety and avoid downtown Dallas,” WFAA 8 ABC reports.
The Dallas Police tweet also reads, “A suspicious package was discovered near the suspect’s location. The package is being secured by DPD bomb squad.”
