Breaking News: 1 Dead, 2 Missing After Boat Hits Barge and Capsizes Near Tappan Zee Bridge, Search for Survivors
Rescue crews from several agencies are on the scene in Tarrytown, New York after a tugboat struck a stationery construction barge by the Tappan Zee bridge around 5:20 a.m. this morning, Saturday, March 12, 2016. One individual from the boat was located and pronounced dead, and the search goes on for two other individuals.
The tug was carrying workers on the West Nyack side of the bridge, the Coast Guard confirmed. The tugboat remains forty feet under the water.
The tugboat, named “The Specialist, was coming from the north and was traveling south down the Hudson River when it hit the barge in the center area under the bridge and overturned. The boat was was fully submerged when crews arrived. The tug was not involved in working on the bridge project.
There is oil slick on the water and pieces of debris. Dive teams are on the scene.

According to the Journal News:
The tugboat that hit a barge early Saturday morning had been pulling a crane from Albany to Jersey City, New Jersey when the crash occured. One person was killed and two other crew members remain missing and are presumed dead. Paul Amon, 63, of Bayville, New Jersey, is the identity of the recovered victim.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo visited the crash site with a boat tour in South Nyack, and called the crash a “tragic accident”….”You have three people who left for work and who aren’t going to come home,” he said.
An investigation by the state police and U.S. Coast Guard, and other agencies will try to determine the cause of the crash, which is the second deadly wreck involving a barge connected with the Tappan Zee Bridge construction. the Journal News reports.
