Franklin, TN — Franklin police have released body camera footage showing former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler being arrested for driving under the influence (DUI) following a crash in October 2024.
The video, recently shared by the Franklin Police Department, shows officers confronting Cutler after he rear-ended another vehicle. The 42-year-old later pleaded guilty and was sentenced to four days in jail, one year of probation, and a $350 fine, along with a one-year driver’s license suspension.
Crash and Arrest Details
According to officers, the crash occurred last October in Franklin, when Cutler’s vehicle collided with another car. Responding officers immediately noticed signs of intoxication.
“Officers reported a strong odor of alcohol, slurred speech, and bloodshot eyes,” the Franklin Police Department stated.
Cutler initially denied drinking but later admitted to consuming alcohol before refusing a field sobriety test.
In footage obtained by FOX 32 Chicago, the exchange between Cutler and an officer captures the tense moment before his arrest.
“Can I ask you a question? How much alcohol have you had today?” the officer asks.
“Uh, none,” Cutler replies.
“Don’t lie to me… how much alcohol have you had today?” the officer presses.
“Uhhhh… a little bit,” Cutler admits.
The officer then orders Cutler to place his hands behind his back and handcuffs him after he refuses a sobriety test.
“Put your hands behind your back,” the officer says, as seen in the video.
What the Footage Shows
The footage begins with officers explaining Tennessee law regarding minor accidents. Police said crash reports are not required if the incident occurs on private property or if damage is below $1,500 per vehicle. Officers instructed both drivers to exchange information and contact their insurance providers.
Moments later, the video shows Cutler standing near his truck, visibly unsteady and uncooperative. Officers describe him as smelling strongly of alcohol and struggling to maintain composure during questioning.
After refusing testing, Cutler is patted down, placed in the back of a Franklin Police Department patrol car, and transported to the Williamson County Jail for booking.
Court Sentencing and Plea Deal
In August 2025, Cutler pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. The Williamson County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that he must serve:
- Four days in county jail
- One year of supervised probation
- $350 in fines
- Mandatory drug testing
- One-year driver’s license suspension
A separate gun charge was dismissed as part of the plea deal after Cutler agreed to forfeit his firearms.
“Cutler will complete probation and drug testing requirements as outlined by the court,” the DA’s office said in a statement.
Community and Public Reaction
The release of the footage has reignited public discussion about DUI enforcement and celebrity accountability. While Cutler has not publicly commented on the incident, his arrest adds to a growing list of professional athletes facing legal issues related to impaired driving.
Officials say the bodycam release aims to promote transparency and awareness of DUI consequences under Tennessee law.
