Hampton, NH – A 22-year-old man from Boxford, Massachusetts was arrested Thursday night after allegedly leading New Hampshire State Police on a high-speed chase while driving under the influence. The pursuit began around 10:30 p.m. on I-95 north near Hampton, New Hampshire, creating a dangerous situation for motorists and law enforcement officers.
The suspect, Mason Hebert, is now facing multiple charges including reckless conduct, aggravated driving under the influence of liquor, and disobeying an officer, according to a news release from New Hampshire State Police.
Troopers Spot BMW Traveling Over 120 MPH
Authorities said the chase began when a trooper observed a BMW being driven recklessly, reportedly at speeds exceeding 120 miles per hour, far above the posted limits. Troopers activated emergency lights and sirens in an attempt to stop the vehicle, but Hebert allegedly refused to pull over, accelerating to evade capture.
Due to the extreme speed and risk to public safety, police made the decision to call off the pursuit, a standard protocol designed to prevent high-speed crashes that could result in injuries or fatalities to other drivers or pedestrians.
Vehicle Located and Suspect Arrested
After the chase was terminated, officers continued the search for Hebert’s vehicle. Authorities later discovered the BMW parked behind a business on Lafayette Road, where they safely apprehended him without further incident.
Hebert was immediately taken into custody and transported to Rockingham County Jail. Police did not report any injuries during the pursuit, nor any damage to property, underscoring the importance of careful pursuit procedures by law enforcement.
Charges and Court Proceedings
Following his arrest, Hebert was formally charged with:
- Reckless conduct
- Aggravated driving under the influence of liquor
- Disobeying an officer
Hebert was scheduled for a hearing on Friday at Portsmouth District Court, where a judge will determine pretrial conditions and possible bail. Authorities stressed that while Hebert faces serious charges, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Dangers of High-Speed DUI Driving
Police warn that incidents like this are extremely hazardous, as drivers under the influence are more likely to make split-second errors and are less capable of handling high-speed maneuvers. Troopers emphasized that pursuing impaired drivers is always a balance between capturing a suspect and protecting the public.
High-speed chases involving intoxicated drivers increase the risk not only for the suspect but also for other motorists, pedestrians, and emergency responders. State and local authorities regularly review pursuit protocols to minimize risk while ensuring dangerous drivers are held accountable.
Community Safety Concerns
The New Hampshire State Police urge all drivers to avoid driving under the influence, especially on busy interstate highways like I-95, which sees heavy traffic at night. Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be a leading factor in serious accidents and fatalities nationwide.
The public is also encouraged to report suspicious or reckless driving behavior immediately, helping law enforcement respond quickly and prevent potential accidents.
