Binghamton Man Charged With Attempted Kidnapping of 8-Year-Old Girl Inside Price Chopper

Binghamton, NY — A 37-year-old Binghamton man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting and attempting to abduct an 8-year-old girl inside a local Price Chopper grocery store earlier this month.

Shocking Incident in Grocery Aisle

According to the Binghamton Police Department, officers responded to a call at approximately 6:15 p.m. on August 1 at the Price Chopper located at 10 Glenwood Avenue. When they arrived, they found Donald Beetlestone being physically restrained by other people in the store.

Investigators say the child had been shopping with her mother and was briefly alone in the produce section when Beetlestone allegedly approached her.

“He struck the child with a bottle and attempted to forcibly remove her from the store,” police said in a statement.

Store Staff and Customer Step In

A female store employee heard the commotion and immediately intervened. A male customer also jumped in to help and managed to physically restrain Beetlestone until police arrived.

Police confirmed there is no known relationship between Beetlestone and the child.

  • The child sustained injuries but was treated at the scene.
  • The suspect was taken into custody without further incident.

Charges Filed and Ongoing Investigation

Beetlestone has been formally charged with the following:

  • First-degree attempted kidnapping
  • First-degree assault
  • Forcible touching
  • Endangering the welfare of a child

He has been remanded to Broome County Jail. Authorities say the case is still under investigation, and more details may be released as they become available.

“This was an extremely serious and disturbing situation, and we commend the store staff and customer for acting quickly,” a Binghamton Police spokesperson said.
