Bethel Town Planner/Land Use Director Steve Palmer has just been appointed as the new as the new Planning and Zoning Director of Westport by First Selectman Jim Marpe. The The announcement was made on March 10, 2016 by Westport First Selectman Marpe.
Palmer is returning to head Westport’s Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Department. He will be starting his new job on April 1, 2016. He is replacing Larry Bradley who left his position in February. Fairfield resident Palmer has been working as Bethel Town Planner/Land Use Director in Bethel for over 10 years. He worked in Westport’s Planning & Zoning Department for 12 years then was hired in Bethel in 2003.
Palmer’s primary duties in Bethel were managing all activities involving the Planning & Zoning Commission, Zoning Board of Appeals and the Inland Wetlands Agent. Palmer was the town planner and an advisor to the Economic Development Commissioner and the First Selectman. He also served as the zoning enforcement official, the blight official and the flood plain manager. Palmer managed and administered Bethel’s 2007 Plan of Conservation and Development (POCD), which included new and contemporary initiatives for economic development, incorporated smart growth planning principles and new goals for providing diverse housing, the announcement said.

According to the announcement, Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe said, “I am very impressed with Steve’s background and work history, … He comes to us with high recommendations and has been described as a ‘visionary’ in his field. Steve is returning to Westport with an understanding and familiarity with many of our zoning regulations and our community’s culture.”
“I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to help guide and shape the future of such a dynamic town and in such a way that Westport will always be a vibrant place to work, enjoy and call home,” Palmer said in a statement in Westport Now. “I’m looking forward to working with the staff, the Planning & Zoning Commission and the Zoning Board of Appeals as well as applicants to address key issues for the department and the Westport community.”
First Selectman Matt Knickerbocker said Thursday that Palmer will be a “tough one to replace.” the News Times reports. “He’s a tremendously talented planner,” Knickerbocker said. “He’s done great work for the town of Bethel.”
No word yet on who the Bethel replacement will be or who handles issues previously assigned to Palmer in the interim.
