Bethel Republican Town Committee Chairman Bryan Terzian Indicates Why There’s No Republican Candidate to Run for First Selectman in Nov. 2021

Report by Paula Antolini, July 30, 2021, 1:38PM EDT

It appears that the local Republicans have a new strategy for 2021, according to Bethel Republican Town Committee (BRTC) Chairman Bryan Terzian.

Candidates’ names have been submitted to the Bethel Town Clerk and there is no Republican candidate listed to run against the Democrat incumbent First Selectman Matthew Knickerbocker, for the November 2021 election. Knickerbocker is running for his 7th term in office after holding the position for 16 years. So we asked Terzian to explain.

We spoke directly to Terzian today and he said, ”The vacancy committee met. We did interview people for the position. We did ask certain people to run but the timing wasn’t right. At this time we feel we’ve put a very strong slate together and look forward to going into the election season.”

We asked Terzian about the future of the party and he said, “We are going to continue to try and groom qualified candidates in the future too. We’re always looking for new members or people to get involved, and welcome people to contact me who want to get involved in the RTC and other things.”

“In the long term this is a good strategy and we’ll be strong in 2023,” Terzian stated.
