In a recent message to Parents, Guardians, Staff, and Community Members, Bethel Public Schools Superintendent Christine Carver addressed unacceptable behavior on the rise among students. She wrote the following:
“Over the past two weeks, we have observed a noticeable increase in mean-spirited behavior and derogatory remarks based on race, gender, and other personal attributes among our student body. As a result, our Administrative Team feels compelled to address this issue openly and work together as a community to foster a safe and inclusive learning environment for all.
“Our school community is built upon the principles of respect, tolerance, and understanding. It deeply troubles us to witness any form of discrimination or disrespect that goes against these core values. It is our responsibility as educators, parents, and community members to instill empathy, acceptance, and kindness in our children.
“To address this issue, we are implementing the following actions:
“Increased Awareness and Education: We will continue to implement our Ruler (emotional intelligence) curriculum, supporting students in transferring this learning across the content areas. We will be incorporating additional educational initiatives into our curriculum to raise awareness about the importance of diversity, inclusion, and respectful behavior. This will include workshops, guest speakers, and classroom discussions.
“Counseling Support: Our school counselors, psychologists, and social workers will continue to visit classrooms, implement developmental guidance lessons, and facilitate restorative conversations. Our counseling services are available to all students who may need to talk. We encourage open communication and are here to provide support and guidance to help students navigate through challenges.
“Parental Involvement: We urge parents to engage in conversations with their children about the impact of their words and actions. Reinforcing the values of respect and empathy at home is crucial in creating a unified front against mean behavior and gender and race-based comments.
“It is essential that we work together to create an environment where every student feels valued, respected, and included. We appreciate your support and cooperation in addressing this matter head-on. If you have any concerns or suggestions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me and/or your child’s principal.
