Bethel native Raghib Allie-Brennan announced today that he will seek the Democratic Party nomination to run for election in the 2nd State Assembly District, which covers portions of Bethel, Danbury, Newtown, and Redding.

March 28, 2017 – Bethel, CT –  Bethel native Raghib Allie-Brennan announced today that he will seek the Democratic Party nomination to run for election in the 2nd State Assembly District, which covers portions of Bethel, Danbury, Newtown, and Redding.

Mr. Allie-Brennan grew up in Bethel as an active member of St. Mary’s Church and graduated from Bethel High School in 2009.

“I am truly excited for this opportunity to put my policy experience to work for the residents of the 2nd District,” said Mr. Allie-Brennan. “I have proven I can reach across the aisle to get things done and I look forward to doing that right here in Hartford.”

Mr. Allie-Brennan laid out his priorities for the campaign: robust economic development, increasing educational opportunities, tackling the opioid epidemic, helping our most vulnerable populations.

“Today’s fast-moving economy sees Connecticut in competition with states that are willing to race to the bottom by gutting worker protections, union rights, minimum wages, and safety regulations. We need to make sure that all Connecticut businesses, from small businesses like the one my father has run for 20 years, to the largest multi-national corporations, have the tools they need to not only survive but to thrive. We must also ensure our residents have the skills they need to acquire the good-paying jobs that are available.”

Mr. Allie-Brennan also stressed the importance of ensuring our public schools remain strong and of reducing the cost of higher education for those who wish to pursue it.

“I am passionate about working for those who need help the most, whether that is our elderly just looking for a decent place to live, young people looking for jobs, or those in need of a helping hand. I understand the perspective of those struggling; and I’m not afraid to push for smart policies that can help better lives.”

Mr. Allie-Brennan’s broad range of experience at the local, state, and federal level — including working on constituent service issues for Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty and on policy in the office of Congresswoman Alma S. Adams — has positioned him to best serve the people of the 2nd District. He emphasized that his experience and connections are strengths that will benefit the people of the 2nd District. “I expect that I will be able to hit the ground running, and will have a seat at the table, given my established relationships at both the local, state and federal level.”

The Democratic Party convention is scheduled for May 17, 2016. Mr. Allie-Brennan intends to spend the time until then listening to the residents of the 2nd District and to help guide the issues he will stress in the campaign.

BIOGRAPHY

 

Raghib Allie-Brennan is passionate about the opportunity to serve our community as State Representative for Connecticut’s 2nd Assembly District. His broad range of experience at the local, state, and federal level has positioned him to better serve the people of the 2nd District.

Raghib grew up in Bethel and graduated from Bethel High School, learning early in life the importance of service to his community. As a member of St. Mary’s Parish and a leader in the church’s youth group, he served some of the poorest people in our nation on several mission trips across America. This exposure to the extraordinary, difficult circumstances so many face inspired him to dedicate his life to public service.

Raghib has been involved in local politics and community activism for years. After graduating from Marymount Manhattan College with a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations, he became a member of the Bethel Democratic Town Committee. On November 5, 2013, Raghib overwhelmingly won the election to serve the Town of Bethel as a member of the Inland Wetlands Commission where he worked to strike an important balance between industry and appropriate protections for the environment and homeowners. This experience fed Raghib’s passion for public service. In 2014, he served in the New Britain office of Congresswoman Elizabeth Esty, where he worked closely with the Constituents Services Director to ensure that the needs of thousands of seniors, veterans, women and children in Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District didn’t fall through the cracks of government bureaucracy.

To better understand policy, Raghib became a congressional staffer in the office of Congresswoman Alma S. Adams, a member of the Education and the Workforce Committee, Small Business Committee, Joint Economic Committee, as well as the Agriculture Committee. As part of the Congresswoman’s legislative team, Raghib managed a robust portfolio of issues such as environmental and health care policy and advised the Congresswoman on controversial issues ranging from the Syrian refugee crisis to our nation’s growing opioid epidemic. In a short period of time he has been able to bring a myriad of ideas to fruition. Raghib also testified on behalf of Congresswoman Adams at a U.S. Commission on Civil Rights briefing on environmental justice issues and protecting our nation’s most vulnerable communities.

Connecticut is faced with serious problems, and also with extraordinary opportunities. However, it will take effective leadership in the 2nd District to solve problems and improve the state. That is why Raghib’s top priorities that he will work to advance include encouraging long-term economic growth, investing in early childhood education, and tackling Connecticut’s opioid epidemic.

Having worked in policy on both the national and local level, Raghib understands how to work across the aisle to get things done. With education, jobs, and economic development as major priorities for Raghib, it’s time to bring his experience to the 2nd District. Raghib will help keep Connecticut’s economy moving in the right direction and ensure our communities have the resources they need to thrive.
