Bethel Education at Risk, Letter to the Editor from Nick Hoffman
As we navigate this unique election cycle it is important that we maintain focus on the elections that have the most impact on our communities. The fiscal health of our state has never been so dire and we have yet to reach the part of the tunnel where we can see the light.
In April of this year the Governor’s Office order sweeping cuts of the education cost sharing grants pulling promised money from Board of Education budgets. Already the Governor has proposed shuttering state technical schools as cost savings. Eliminating regional institutions that develop job-ready students in a state devoid of employable individuals with these skills is a reflection of how disconnected our current direction is with the needs of our economy.
Make no mistake; education is not safe under the current administration. The last two fiscal years Connecticut has had budget deficits of $113 million and $170 million with looming budget deficits over the next three years projected to be in the billions of dollars annually. Local Board of Education budgets will be profoundly impacted as a result of this fiscal tsunami.
We need a firewall in Hartford to protect the quality of education that has drawn us to our communities. We need a legislative delegation that can recognize another unfunded mandate in committee and not even allow it to make to the floor for a vote. We need a legislative delegation that has the experience in both Hartford and on our local boards of education who can articulate the educational needs of our community. We need advocates for us and our children in Hartford not an activist for their political party.
Our obligation as voters is to ensure our communities remain healthy and vibrant, not to cede our responsibility to those beholden to special interest. Bethel friends and neighbors please vote row D for the Independent party endorsed candidates and protect our town’s voice in Hartford.
