Bethel Board of Selectmen Approve Tax Relief Program

BETHEL TAX RELIEF PROGRAM APPROVED

On Tuesday night, the Board of Selectmen unanimously approved a tax deferral program to help residents and businesses who have suffered income losses as a result of the pandemic shutdown. The program is open to all Bethel residents, businesses and non-profits.

The program offers a 90-day deferral on all real and personal property taxes, utility charges and assessments between March 10th and July 1st, 2020. This will apply to April tax bills that are currently pending, as well as tax bills to be issued in June. For those that qualify, the new deadline date for April taxes will be July 1st; for June taxes, the deadline date will be October 1st.

Qualifying for the program is simple: residents and businesses must sign a form attesting to a loss of income during this period of 20% or more.

In recognition of the financial hardships brought on the by global COVID-19 pandemic, the Town of Bethel is offering all qualified taxpayers the opportunity to delay payment of real estate, property and utility taxes, charges and assessments for 90 days.

The tax deferment program is open to all qualified residents, non-profits and businesses, including landlords. To qualify, taxpayers must attest that their income has decreased by at least 20% during the emergency period due to layoffs, furloughs, business closures or other factor related to COVID-19.

The deferment program is in effect from March 10, 2020, the day the public health emergency was declared by Governor Lamont, through July 1, 2020. This means tax and utility charges for both April and June will each be eligible for the 90-day deferral

IMPORTANT ITEMS OF NOTE

1. You must file your application for bills due from April 1, 2020 to July 1, 2020 by July 1, 2020 even if you have not received your bill.  Failure to apply by July 1, 2020 or an incomplete application will result in failure to qualify for this tax deferment.

2. Any bill not paid by 90 days from the due date will be subject to interest of 1 ½% per month.

3. The Town of Bethel accepts partial payments on all accounts.

Please read the instructions before completing the application. It is the applicant’s responsibility to accurately complete this form and provide any required proof in order to be considered for the tax deferral. Taxpayers will be notified if they are approved, or if further information is needed.
This application must be filed no later than July 1, 2020
This application is for residents, businesses, non-profits, and landlords who have been financially impacted by COVID-19.
ALL APPLICANTS – Check the box after “DEFERRAL PROGRAM” on page 1 and read what this program allows before continuing.
NOTE: ESCROWED REAL ESTATE ACCOUNTS ARE NOT ELIGIBLE FOR TAX DEFERRAL PER GOVERNOR’S EXECUTIVE ORDER.

Residents:

1. Fill out all information required on lines 1 – 5.
2. Under “CHECK PROPER ELIGIBILITY” check the Resident box. 
3. Check the box that states you have suffered at least a 20% income loss due to COVID-19.
4. Check the box stating proof of ownership and provide driver’s license, utility bill or other proof..
5. Sign and date page 2 of the application.

Businesses/Non-Profits

3. Check the box that says Proof of Ownership and provide a Business License, Utility Bill, or Secretary of State listing
