Duluth, MN — After just a brief reprieve, northeast Minnesota is once again under an air quality alert, as wildfire smoke returns to the region. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) issued the alert beginning 1 a.m. Tuesday, with conditions expected to last through noon Wednesday.
Smoke Impacting Arrowhead Region and Tribal Nations
The alert affects several key areas in the Arrowhead region, including:
- Duluth
- Two Harbors
- Ely
- Hibbing
- Grand Portage and Fond du Lac Tribal Nations
According to FOX 9 Minneapolis-St. Paul, air quality levels are forecast to reach ranges considered unhealthy for sensitive groups, including young children, older adults, and people with asthma or heart disease.
While most areas will experience moderate to unhealthy levels, some localized pockets may experience worse conditions for short periods.
Residents Urged to Take Precautions
The MPCA warns that the hazy skies and the smell of smoke may be noticeable throughout the affected region. People in impacted communities are advised to:
- Avoid prolonged outdoor activities, especially if part of a sensitive group
- Use air conditioning or indoor air filters if possible
- Close windows and doors to limit indoor smoke exposure
- Consider N95 or KN95 masks if you must go outside
Record Stretch of Alerts Continues
This latest advisory comes just after the state emerged from a record six-day air quality alert, which ended Sunday night. It was one of the longest continuous stretches of poor air quality in recent Minnesota history.
