Green Bay, WI — Smoky skies and unhealthy air quality are expected to persist across Wisconsin through the early part of the week, prompting health officials to urge caution, especially for people with respiratory or heart conditions.
Canadian Wildfire Smoke Lingers Over State
According to the National Weather Service and local meteorologists, smoke from Canadian wildfires continues to drift south, creating hazy skies and triggering an Air Quality Alert.
The alert specifically warns that air may be unhealthy for sensitive groups, including:
- People with asthma
- Individuals with heart or lung disease
- Children and older adults
“Everyone else should keep outdoor activities shorter and less intense, and go inside if you experience symptoms,” officials advised.
Health Recommendations During the Alert
Health agencies urge residents across Wisconsin to take basic precautions:
- Avoid prolonged outdoor exercise
- Keep windows closed and use air conditioning with clean filters
- Use N95 masks if outdoor activity is necessary
- Monitor symptoms like shortness of breath, coughing, or chest discomfort
Even those without medical conditions are advised to limit exposure if possible.
Weather Outlook for the Week
Despite the smoky skies, the weather will remain mostly mild through midweek:
- Monday: Partly to mostly cloudy, highs in the upper 70s to low 80s, slight humidity
- Tuesday: Smoky haze, mostly sunny, high near 83°F
- Wednesday: Partly cloudy, high of 84°F
- Thursday: Muggy with afternoon showers or thunderstorms possible, high around 85°F
By the weekend, conditions will turn hot and humid, with highs of 89°F on both Friday and Saturday, and a chance of rain returning Sunday with a high near 86°F.
No Immediate Relief from Smoke Expected
Unfortunately, forecasters say the smoke will likely remain in the air at least through midweek, with no major weather systems on the horizon strong enough to clear it out. As wildfire season in Canada continues, episodic smoke events may persist throughout the month.
