‘A Refugee’s Lament,’ Letter to the Editor from Frances Pulle

A REFUGEE’S LAMENT ?

I’d kill to be a dog in the USA. . .?
Wear Gucci, Calvin Klein,
a rhinestone collar lovingly
engraved with my moniker, “Valentine”. ?

I’d eat organic, bed down by the fire
on a quilt (oriental beneath). . . ?
Take supplements (daily), Dentastix chews
(for healthy gums ‘n’ teeth).

I’d patronize the “Pampered Pup”
not infrequently because
“cruelty-free, PETA approved alternatives” ?
are kind to eyes and paws.

Should I reap the consequences of disease,
suffer indignities left and right. . .
I’d be soothed, sedated, overdosed ?
(if indicated),
sent gently into that good night. ???

I dream I’m a dog in the USA, ??
an adoptee rescued from the city pound. . .?
I think this as I run ‘n’ hide, play dead day after day. . .
I’m already half-human and half-hound.
