Long Island Driver Accused of Slashing, Biting Motorist in Violent Road Rage Confrontation; Perpetrator Arrested (1)

Huntington, New York — A routine drive turned into a horrifying roadside assault in Huntington on Tuesday afternoon, when a 26-year-old Long Island motorist allegedly slashed and bit another driver during an explosive bout of road rage, according to Suffolk County Police.

Investigators say Jayson Heitner, driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee, collided with a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter van around 3:40 p.m. near the intersection of West Neck Road and Old Hickory Lane. Moments after the impact, authorities say Heitner launched into an uncontrollable fury.

Alleged Slashing and Biting During Violent Struggle

Police say Heitner stormed toward the 60-year-old Sprinter driver holding a boxcutter, sparking a violent physical altercation in the roadway. During the struggle, Heitner allegedly slashed the victim repeatedly across his face and body and even bit several of the man’s fingers, leaving him bloodied and badly injured.

The victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors performed emergency treatment, including multiple stitches to close numerous wounds, according to criminal complaint documents.

Suspect Arrested and Hit With Felony Charge

Officers arrested Heitner shortly after the attack. He is now charged with second-degree assault, a felony, officials confirmed.

During his Wednesday arraignment in First District Court, Heitner entered a not guilty plea. A judge ordered him held on $75,000 cash bail, $150,000 bond, or a $750,000 partially secured bond. He is scheduled to return to court on Monday.

Defense Claims Client Was Acting in Self-Defense

Heitner’s attorney, Chase Brown, pushed back against the allegations, claiming his client was not the aggressor but rather the victim of a reckless driver behind the wheel of a significantly larger vehicle.

According to Brown, the Mercedes Sprinter driver actually struck Heitner’s Jeep first, and the older motorist allegedly admitted in court that he was also holding a knife during the incident.

“He had a knife in his hand when my client went up to the car to make sure he was OK,” Brown told reporters. “He’s the one who started it. We look forward to exonerating my client. There’s a clear self-defense claim.”

Details Emerge About Heitner’s Background

Attorney Chase Brown also noted that Heitner is a physician’s assistant student and currently works as a paramedic, suggesting his client’s actions were not aligned with someone intent on causing harm.

Despite the defense’s statements, investigators say the evidence in the case—including the victim’s extensive injuries—led to the serious felony charge.

The incident remains under active investigation as authorities review witness statements, surveillance footage, and the physical evidence collected from the scene.
