Galveston, Texas — A 77-year-old man riding his bicycle early Sunday morning was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash, prompting Galveston Police to launch an urgent search for the driver responsible.
The victim, identified as Fidel Estrada, was hit in the 2300 block of 53rd Street by a pickup truck that fled the scene immediately after the collision.
Crash Occurred Before Dawn
According to the Galveston Police Department, Estrada had been riding his bicycle when a white or silver pickup truck — believed to be a Ford — collided with him. Witnesses reported seeing a ladder in the truck bed, a detail investigators say may help narrow down potential suspects.
The incident happened early in the morning, during hours when visibility is low and fewer drivers are on the road, as per Click2Houston.
Witness Stayed, Driver Fled
Police said the driver of the pickup did not stop, instead speeding away westbound on Stewart Road, leaving Estrada critically injured on the roadway.
A witness who saw the crash stayed at the scene, immediately called 911, and provided information to investigators. Police have not yet disclosed how many witnesses were present, but the department emphasized that the witness’s actions were crucial.
Victim Died at the Hospital
Emergency responders transported Estrada to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. No additional medical information has been released, though police confirmed the injuries were severe and consistent with a high-impact collision.
Estrada’s next of kin have been notified.
Police Searching for Truck With Ladder in Bed
Investigators are now focused on locating the white or silver Ford pickup involved. The distinctive ladder in the truck bed could indicate that the vehicle belongs to someone working in construction, maintenance, contracting, or another trade.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses along 53rd Street and Stewart Road to track the truck’s route after the crash.
Hit-and-Run Cases a Growing Concern
Galveston Police noted that hit-and-run incidents continue to pose a major challenge on the island, especially involving cyclists. The city’s grid layout and steady tourist traffic often place pedestrians and bike riders in close proximity to vehicles.
Officials urged drivers to remember that in Texas, leaving the scene of a crash that results in serious injury or death is a felony, carrying significant prison time.
Community Asked to Help
Authorities are appealing to the public for assistance in finding the driver.
Anyone who saw the crash, noticed a damaged pickup truck, or can identify a similar vehicle with a ladder in the truck bed is urged to contact the Galveston Police Department immediately. Even small details — like a missing mirror, front-end damage, or new dents — could move the investigation forward.
Police stressed that anonymous tips are welcome.
