Los Angeles, CA — An early-morning crash along Sunset Boulevard left one driver dead and another injured after a speeding vehicle plowed into multiple parked cars in Hollywood on Friday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). The violent collision, which occurred in a dense nightlife and commuter corridor, brought traffic to a halt as investigators swarmed the scene.
Deadly Crash Reported Around 2:42 A.M. in Hollywood
Authorities said the crash happened at approximately 2:42 a.m. near the intersection of Sunset Boulevard and Formosa Avenue, where a vehicle traveling at high speed collided with three parked cars. LAPD officers responding to the scene found significant damage stretched across the roadway.
One of the parked vehicles had a person sitting in the driver’s seat at the moment of impact. That individual, whose identity has not been released, was rushed to a nearby hospital and was later listed in stable condition. Police said the injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
The driver of the vehicle that initiated the crash was also transported to a hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival, as per KTLA. LAPD said the deceased driver’s name and gender remain undisclosed pending notification of next of kin.
Witnesses Suggest Possible Street Racing Before Impact
While police have not confirmed the sequence of events, several witnesses spoke to KNN, a freelance stringer service, describing what they believed was a street-racing scenario moments before the crash. Witness accounts reported seeing two BMWs speeding down Sunset Boulevard, appearing to race side by side.
One witness told KNN that they heard a “loud boom” and then saw a man lying on the sidewalk, motionless and not breathing. That individual is believed to be the driver who did not survive.
LAPD officers cordoned off the roadway shortly after arriving, shutting down traffic in both directions while collision investigators examined tire marks, debris patterns, and the positions of all involved vehicles. Officials emphasized that while racing was reported by witnesses, no official determination has been made regarding contributing factors.
Investigation Underway Into What Caused the Fatal Crash
Authorities said the cause of the collision remains under active investigation. Detectives will review potential elements including speed, impairment, mechanical issues, or driver behavior that may have led to the deadly crash.
Surveillance cameras in the area — a stretch known for nightlife, restaurants, and heavy foot traffic — are expected to play a key role in uncovering what happened in the seconds before the high-impact collision.
LAPD noted that no arrests or citations have been issued at this time, and no additional injuries were reported beyond the two drivers.
Police Ask for Information From the Public
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash, seen the vehicles beforehand, or has video footage — including dashcam or surveillance — is urged to contact the LAPD’s Traffic Division. Investigators say community cooperation is crucial in reconstructing the timeline and determining whether racing, DUI, or other violations were involved.
