Woman Leads Police on 180-Mile Chase From California to Mexico in Stolen Van

Thousand Oaks, California – A California woman led police on a 180-mile high-speed chase from Ventura County all the way to Mexico, deftly evading multiple spike strips and roadblocks before eventually being captured after crossing back into the U.S. the next day, authorities said.

Woman Reportedly Stole Minivan from Sober Living Home

According to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office, 29-year-old Alyssa Wilson fled from her sober living group home on East Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks on Monday morning. She allegedly stole a gray 2004 Toyota Sienna minivan belonging to another resident before speeding off toward the Mexican border — a journey that would span nearly two hundred miles.

The vehicle’s owner noticed that both the van and the ignition key were missing and quickly alerted police. Deputies located Wilson just 14 miles away from the facility, but when they attempted to stop her, she refused to pull over and sped off eastbound on the 118 Freeway, officials said.

“Wilson immediately fled and began driving recklessly at speeds up to 90 miles per hour,” the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office stated.

Multi-Agency Pursuit Across Southern California

As Wilson tore through Ventura County, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) took over the pursuit after she crossed into Los Angeles County around 11 a.m.. CHP officers tracked her as she merged onto the southbound 405 Freeway, where she reportedly swerved past several spike strips and roadblocks that officers deployed in an attempt to slow her down.

Authorities said at least four sets of spikes were placed along her route — but Wilson somehow maneuvered around each one, even managing to avoid a failed deployment when traffic had been halted ahead of her.

She continued south at high speeds, weaving between light traffic as she merged onto the 5 Freeway and then the 805 Freeway, racing through San Diego County toward the border.

Escape Across the Border into Mexico

Around 1:30 p.m., after more than two hours of pursuit, Wilson successfully crossed the U.S.-Mexico border near Tijuana, according to ABC 7. Authorities were left behind as she drove out of the country — having evaded every effort by law enforcement to stop her during the 180-mile chase.

Despite the chaotic pursuit, officials confirmed that Wilson avoided major traffic and that no injuries or accidents were reported along her route.

Detained After Returning to the U.S.

In a surprising twist, Wilson crossed back into the United States on Tuesday afternoon, driving the same stolen minivan through the San Ysidro Port of Entry. U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers detained her immediately around 1:10 p.m., before turning her over to CHP San Diego officers.

“The minivan was safely recovered, and Wilson was transferred into the custody of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department,” the CHP San Diego Area Office said in a statement.

Wilson was later booked into Ventura County Jail, where she now faces pending criminal charges related to vehicle theft and evading law enforcement.

Mental Health Concerns and Ongoing Investigation

Authorities believe Wilson was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the incident. Investigators said her behavior before the chase — including her sudden flight from the sober living home — indicated she may have been in psychological distress.

The CHP has not yet confirmed what specific charges will be filed but stated that the case remains under active investigation across multiple jurisdictions.

“Given the distance and nature of the pursuit, this remains a complex, multi-agency investigation,” a CHP spokesperson said.
