Fort Wayne Traffic Stop Uncovers Over 65 Pounds of Cocaine Hidden in Pickup

Fort Wayne, IN – A routine traffic stop in Fort Wayne turned into a major narcotics bust last week when police discovered more than 65 pounds of cocaine hidden under a dog cage in the bed of a pickup truck.

Authorities say the seizure has an estimated street value exceeding $600,000, making it one of the larger local drug confiscations in recent years.

Stop Sparks Suspicion

The Fort Wayne Police Department reported that uniformed narcotics detectives pulled over a Chevy Silverado with Florida license plates on Thursday, November 6, for speeding. Officers called in a K-9 team, which alerted to the potential presence of illegal drugs, prompting a more thorough search of the vehicle.

Discovery of Drugs and Firearm

When the driver exited the pickup, detectives noticed a handgun in plain view, raising immediate safety concerns. The bed of the truck contained a large dog housed in a cage. Upon further inspection, officers discovered a hidden compartment beneath the cage, revealing approximately 30 individually wrapped kilos of cocaine—totaling over 65 pounds, as per Fox59.

Authorities say the size and method of concealment indicated sophisticated planning, suggesting the drugs were intended for large-scale distribution. The combination of a firearm and narcotics further emphasized the potential danger posed to public safety.

Arrest and Charges

The driver was identified as 25-year-old Jordon Wayne Lanier from Florida. He was arrested at the scene and charged with dealing in cocaine as well as possession of marijuana. Police stated that the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed as more information emerges.

Impact on the Community

Law enforcement officials praised the stop as a success for Fort Wayne’s narcotics division, highlighting the effectiveness of traffic enforcement in combating drug trafficking. The discovery of such a large quantity of cocaine hidden in a civilian vehicle underscores the ongoing challenges law enforcement faces in keeping illegal drugs off the streets.

Authorities are reminding residents that even seemingly routine stops can uncover serious criminal activity and are encouraging anyone with tips about drug trafficking in the area to contact police.
