Sebastian, FL – A tense SWAT standoff in Sebastian, Florida, ended in a bizarre twist when a barricaded suspect literally fell through the ceiling and into the arms of law enforcement officers, according to the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office.
Body-camera video released by authorities captured the dramatic moment when 37-year-old Keith Rodgers, a suspected car thief, dropped from the ceiling of a home after hours of hiding during the confrontation.
Stolen Truck Triggers Investigation
The incident began when deputies received an alert from license plate readers about a stolen white Ford F-350 traveling westbound near Louisiana Avenue on County Road 512. The pickup truck, reported stolen from Osceola County on October 19, was carrying a load of lumber at the time.
Through a combination of surveillance footage and investigative work from the Real Time Crime Center, authorities identified the suspect as Keith Rodgers, a resident of Sebastian.
Deputies later spotted Rodgers at a Home Depot, where he was allegedly purchasing lumber while still driving the stolen vehicle, according to the reports.
Suspect Barricades Himself Inside
Law enforcement tracked the stolen Ford F-350 to a residence at 443 Melrose Lane. When deputies arrived, Rodgers was seen unloading the lumber but quickly fled into the home upon noticing police presence.
Officials said Rodgers barricaded himself inside and refused to respond to commands. Due to his extensive criminal history and previous threats to engage in a shootout rather than return to jail, the SWAT team and Crisis Negotiators were called in to handle the situation.
From the Attic to SWAT’s Arms

After several tense hours, law enforcement suspected Rodgers was hiding in the attic. Their suspicions were confirmed when body-camera footage captured the exact moment he fell through the ceiling — landing directly into the arms of SWAT officers waiting below.
The unexpected fall brought a sudden end to the standoff, with Rodgers immediately taken into custody without further resistance.
Charges Filed Against Rodgers
Authorities confirmed that Keith Rodgers faces multiple charges, including:
- Grand Theft Auto
- Resisting an Officer Without Violence
The Indian River County Sheriff’s Office credited collaboration and patience among deputies, SWAT, and negotiators for bringing the tense situation to a peaceful close — despite its surprising finale.
Sheriff Praises Team’s Professionalism
While the sheriff’s office has not released a formal statement from Sheriff Eric Flowers, officials emphasized that no officers or civilians were injured during the encounter. The department noted that Rodgers’ fall from the ceiling served as both an unexpected and ironic end to a high-risk standoff.
