New York City, NY — Forecasters have placed New York City, Long Island, and parts of New Jersey under a freeze watch as unseasonably cold temperatures are set to blanket much of the East Coast early this week.
According to NYC Emergency Management, the freeze watch will be in effect late Monday night into Tuesday morning, with temperatures expected to drop near 30°F. The National Weather Service (NWS) has also extended the watch into Nassau and Suffolk counties, as well as portions of southern Connecticut and northeastern New Jersey.
These below-freezing temperatures are being driven by a powerful polar vortex sweeping across the eastern half of the United States — bringing a sharp early taste of winter to tens of millions of Americans.
Arctic Air to Sweep Across the East Coast
Meteorologists say the cold blast will begin Sunday as arctic air from Canada pushes deep into the Empire State. FOX Weather Meteorologist Dylan DeBruyn told The Post that the system could affect more than 100 million people across the eastern U.S.
Winds are expected to gust over 30 mph through Tuesday, with wind chill values plunging to a frigid 25°F. The icy breeze will make conditions feel much colder than the actual air temperature, especially during the morning hours.
Snow Expected in Western and Central New York
The bitter cold won’t be limited to the greater New York City area. Western and Central New York, including Buffalo, Syracuse, and Watertown, are forecast to experience heavy snow squalls and lake-effect snow beginning Monday, according to meteorologists.
In a surprising twist, even Tallahassee, Florida, is expected to experience freezing temperatures before New York does — highlighting just how far south this cold front is stretching.
When Will Temperatures Improve?

Relief is on the way by Wednesday, when temperatures in New York City are expected to climb back into the 50s. Overnight lows will also return to more typical mid-to-upper 40s, according to DeBruyn.
Until then, the region is urged to prepare for frost and freeze conditions, which can damage crops and vegetation and officially mark the end of the growing season, the NWS said.
Safety and Preparation Tips for Residents
Officials are urging residents to take precautions as the freeze watch approaches.
NYC Emergency Management issued several safety reminders, including:
- Bring pets indoors overnight — even short exposure to freezing temperatures can be dangerous for animals.
- Move outdoor plants inside or cover them to protect against frost damage.
- Let a small trickle of water run from faucets located in unheated or drafty areas to prevent frozen pipes.
- Dress in warm layers and use extra caution when walking, biking, or driving, as slick conditions and frost may develop on roads and windshields.
These precautions can help minimize damage to homes and property — and ensure safety for residents as the first major cold blast of the season grips the region.
