Houston, TX – A chaotic scene unfolded in The Heights neighborhood of Houston after six theft suspects fled a traffic stop on Thursday, leaving a baby alone inside the vehicle, according to the Houston Police Department (HPD).
Theft Suspects Abandon Baby During Traffic Stop
The incident took place in the 100 block of East 4th Street, near Heights Boulevard, when HPD officers pulled over a suspect vehicle believed to be connected to a theft investigation.
Police said that as soon as the car came to a stop, six suspects jumped out and ran, abandoning the infant who was still inside. Officers immediately secured the child while beginning a pursuit of the fleeing individuals.
Four Suspects in Custody, Two Remain on the Run
Authorities confirmed that four of the suspects were apprehended after a short chase. Two others remain at large, and police are actively searching the surrounding area to locate them.
Law enforcement sources told Click2Houston that the group is suspected of stealing merchandise from a Lululemon store prior to the traffic stop. The nature of the theft and the total value of stolen goods have not yet been released.
Police Ensure Baby’s Safety
After recovering the baby, officers immediately ensured the child’s safety and notified Child Protective Services (CPS). HPD stated that the infant appeared to be unharmed, but was taken to a local hospital for precautionary evaluation.
Investigators are now determining whether the baby belonged to any of the suspects and if additional child endangerment charges will be filed.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not yet released the names of the suspects who were arrested or the identities of those still on the run. HPD officials said the theft operation may be part of a larger organized retail crime ring that has recently targeted high-end retail stores across the Houston area.
Detectives are reviewing surveillance footage from the Lululemon store and nearby locations in The Heights to piece together the timeline of events leading up to the chase.
Community Shocked by Reckless Behavior
Local residents expressed disbelief that the suspects would abandon a baby during their attempt to flee police. “It’s unbelievable,” said one nearby resident. “You can replace stolen stuff — but leaving a baby behind like that is just heartless.”
Police are urging anyone with information about the two remaining suspects to contact Crime Stoppers of Houston. Anonymous tips leading to their arrest may qualify for a cash reward.
