Detroit, MI – After a brief stretch of sunshine on Thursday, clouds are returning to Metro Detroit, setting the stage for rain showers to end the workweek. Skies will turn mostly cloudy overnight, and light rain is expected to develop before sunrise on Friday morning.
Temperatures will stay mild through the night, with overnight lows around 40°F as residents wake up on Friday morning.
The first batch of rain showers will move through early in the day, followed by scattered showers lingering into the afternoon and early evening. As the system passes, skies will begin to clear slightly by Friday night, giving way to partly to mostly cloudy conditions.
Friday’s high will reach near 59°F, while Friday night brings a chillier low around 37°F, according to the forecasts.
Weekend Forecast: Rain Turns to Snow
The weather pattern takes a wintry turn as we move into the weekend. Another system will approach the region Saturday night through Sunday, bringing a mix of rain and snow to parts of southeast Michigan.
Saturday will remain mostly cloudy, with highs near 48°F. Showers are expected to return late Saturday night, followed by a sharp temperature drop as colder air moves in from the north.
By Sunday, that cold air combined with a low-pressure system tracking just south of Metro Detroit will create a chance of rain and snow showers across the region. Areas north and west of Detroit are expected to stay cold enough for snow, possibly seeing light accumulation during the day.
Sunday’s high will hover near 39°F, marking the coldest day of the season so far.
First Accumulating Snow Possible

This weekend could bring Metro Detroit’s first measurable snowfall of the season. Meteorologists say only one-tenth of an inch is needed to count as an accumulating snow event, and that appears likely by Sunday night into Monday.
As temperatures continue to fall, rain showers will fully transition to snow showers across the area by late Sunday night, lasting into Monday morning.
The northwest wind flow expected behind the departing system will trigger lake-effect snow showers, especially across southern Michigan and the Great Lakes region. This pattern will also pull in a reinforcing shot of cold air, keeping the start of next week unseasonably chilly.
Next Week: Cold Start, Gradual Warmup
High temperatures will drop from the upper 40s on Saturday to the upper 30s on Sunday, and further to the mid-30s by Monday. Despite the chill, a slight rebound is on the way by midweek.
Tuesday should bring partly cloudy skies with highs near 40°F, and by Wednesday, readings could climb back into the upper 40s as warmer air returns.
Even so, forecasters remind residents that winter is on the doorstep, and this weekend’s system could be a preview of what’s to come in late November.
