Slidell, Louisiana — A mother of three from Slidell was recognized this week for her quick thinking and generosity after she lent her car to a police officer to help catch a suspected shoplifter over the weekend.

The incident began on Saturday at a Dillard’s store in Slidell when Sgt. Jeff Kahrs was alerted to a shoplifting in progress, according to the Slidell Police Department.

Suspects Flee the Scene

The suspect, later identified as 34-year-old Kelsey Baird from Navarre, Florida, reportedly discarded stolen items when she saw the officer entering the store. Attempting to flee, Baird ran through the parking lot and jumped into a vehicle waiting outside, driven by her boyfriend, 43-year-old Eric Boudreaux of Biloxi, Mississippi.

Police bodycam footage shows Sgt. Kahrs pursuing Baird through the parking lot until she got into the car and sped off. That’s when Lesli Smith, a local resident, approached and asked if the officer needed a ride.

“Want to hop in?” Smith asked.

Sgt. Kahrs accepted, and together they followed the suspects safely until backup officers arrived. Kahrs continued directing the pursuit via police radio while Smith helped navigate through traffic during the chase.

Suspects Charged

Backup officers eventually apprehended both suspects. Baird and Boudreaux were charged with theft and resisting an officer by flight, with Baird additionally charged with methamphetamine possession.

Recognition for Heroism

Police Chief Daniel Seuzeneau publicly thanked Smith for her selfless act, highlighting her immediate willingness to help.

“To the good Samaritan… people like you are the reason why Slidell is a great place to live and work. Without hesitation, you assisted one of our officers… expecting nothing in return,” Chief Seuzeneau said.

On Tuesday, Smith was presented with the Citizenship Award at a ceremony attended by police and Slidell Mayor Randy Fandal.

Lesli Smith Reflects on the Incident

Smith, a lifelong resident of Slidell, said her only thought at the time was, “How could I help?” She praised the police department for their professionalism and swift response to the alleged shoplifting.

“I was so impressed, that was my most important thing I wanted to come across,” she told reporters. After dropping Sgt. Kahrs off to apprehend the suspects, she even returned to her shopping at TJ Maxx, showing her calm and practical nature during the incident.

Police Message to the Community

Chief Seuzeneau also issued a warning to potential criminals:

“We will do whatever it takes to catch you and fully prosecute you. Stay out of our city.”

The department emphasized that incidents like this showcase both community support and police dedication in keeping Slidell safe for residents and businesses alike.
