Cherokee County, SC — The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office has made a major breakthrough in the fight against narcotics after seizing more than 500 pounds of methamphetamine in what officials are calling the second-largest meth operation in county history.
The discovery was made during a narcotics investigation on Tuesday morning, leading to two arrests and the dismantling of a large-scale meth lab.
Discovery at a Blacksburg Property
According to the reports, investigators executed a search warrant at a residence on Kings Creek Ford Road in Blacksburg, uncovering a clandestine meth lab hidden inside an abandoned mobile home. Inside, authorities found an estimated 500 pounds of methamphetamine along with various chemical materials used in the drug’s production.
Officials estimate the total street value of the seized meth to be between $1.5 million and $1.7 million. The scale of the operation shocked even veteran investigators.
While processing the scene, deputies also recovered a 2005 Range Rover reported stolen from Cleveland County, North Carolina, linking the drug operation to possible additional criminal activity across state lines.
Two Suspects Arrested
Later that evening, deputies conducted a traffic stop connected to the ongoing investigation and arrested Billie Lee Pitts, 51, and Joseph Todd Martin, 47.
During the stop, both suspects were found to be in possession of methamphetamine and were later tied directly to the Blacksburg property where the meth lab was discovered.
Both Pitts and Martin are facing multiple charges, including:
- Possession of methamphetamine (more than 400 grams)
- Distribution of methamphetamine
Authorities said additional charges could follow as the investigation develops.
Federal Agencies Join Investigation
The Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) unit has joined local authorities to assist in the ongoing case. Together, they are examining the broader network behind the meth production and distribution ring, which may extend beyond Cherokee County.
Sheriff’s officials noted that the seizure represents a significant step toward dismantling a major drug trafficking pipeline operating through the region.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement sources say the investigation remains active and ongoing, with potential additional arrests expected in the coming days. Deputies are also working to identify the origin of the chemicals and distribution channels linked to the meth lab.
