Three Dead, Driver Charged after Alleged Drunk Driving Crash in Southwest Houston

Houston, TX – A driver has been charged with intoxication manslaughter following a tragic crash in southwest Houston that left three people dead early Sunday morning, according to Houston police.

Deadly Collision at West Orem and Almeda

The devastating incident occurred near the intersection of West Orem Drive and Almeda Road shortly after 1 a.m. on Sunday. Investigators say a gray Chrysler, traveling southbound on Almeda, allegedly ran a red light with its headlights off, slamming into a white Buick that was lawfully driving eastbound on West Orem through a green light.

The impact of the T-bone collision was so powerful that it triggered a chain reaction, involving three other vehicles that were stopped at the intersection.

Three Lives Lost in the Buick

Authorities confirmed that three people inside the white Buick were killed in the crash. Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a third passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle, later died at a nearby hospital.

The names of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of family members, as reported.

Suspect’s Blood Alcohol Level ‘Well Over Legal Limit’

The driver of the Chrysler was transported to a local hospital in critical condition following the crash. Investigators determined that his blood alcohol content (BAC) was well over the legal limit, prompting authorities to upgrade his charges from DWI (Driving While Intoxicated) to intoxication manslaughter.

After reviewing surveillance video and toxicology results, police confirmed that the Chrysler was seen driving without headlights and running the red light moments before the deadly collision.

Police Urge Safe Driving and Sobriety

In a statement, HPD Sgt. Rebecca Dallas emphasized the importance of making responsible choices when drinking.

“We want to keep the streets of Houston safe,” Sgt. Dallas said. “There are ride-share options and other safe ways to get home. If you plan to drink, make sure you have a safe ride, so you don’t put other people at risk.”

Police are urging residents to take advantage of designated driver programs, public transportation, or ride-share apps to prevent more tragedies on Houston’s roads.

Investigation Continues

The Houston Police Department continues to investigate the deadly incident and is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has additional video footage to contact their Traffic Enforcement Division.

Authorities believe speed and alcohol were significant contributing factors in the crash. They are working to determine whether the driver may face additional charges once the full investigation is complete.

City officials have once again urged drivers to slow down, obey traffic signals, and never drive impaired — reminders that come as Houston continues to record one of the highest rates of DUI-related crashes in Texas.
