Austin, TX — Texas continues to cement its reputation as one of the most popular destinations for Americans relocating across state lines. In the past year alone, more than 265,000 people have moved to the state — many drawn by job opportunities, affordable housing, and the absence of a state income tax.
A new Texas Migration Report found that the influx equals roughly 60 people per day, reflecting ongoing population growth driven by both domestic migration and economic expansion.
Californians Lead the Move to Texas
The report, which analyzed 18 million moves between June 2024 and May 2025, shows that Californians made up 14% of all out-of-state arrivals. Other top origins include Florida and Colorado, as Americans continue to seek lower living costs and better employment prospects.
According to Express News, the majority of new residents relocated for career opportunities, improved housing, or simply a fresh start.
“Texas’ migration momentum shows no signs of slowing, though its growth story may evolve,” the report noted.
Dallas, Austin, and Houston See the Most Movement
Major metro areas such as Dallas, Austin, and Houston remain the top destinations for newcomers. San Antonio ranked fourth, attracting just over 10% of out-of-state residents, while the Dallas–Fort Worth–Arlington region drew roughly one-third of all new Texans — about 519,000 residents.
Even with the surge of arrivals, the Dallas area saw over 85,000 people leave last year, showing that mobility within the state remains high.
In total, more than 1.6 million adults moved to or within Texas last year, with 84% of movers staying inside the state. Many Houstonians, Austinites, and San Antonians relocated to northern Texas, particularly to Dallas and surrounding suburbs, for new career or housing opportunities.
Where Texans Are Moving Next
Interestingly, Texans leaving the state are heading to the same destinations as those moving in — Florida, California, and Colorado. The data suggests that people are seeking similar climates and job markets when relocating.
Migration analysts say that Texas’ combination of low taxes, corporate relocations, and affordable cost of living continues to make it a magnet for professionals and families alike.
“Companies like Tesla and Oracle have fueled the migration trend from high-cost states to Texas,” the report stated.
Who’s Moving to Texas?
The majority of movers — nearly three out of every four residents — belong to Generation X or the millennial generation. Researchers attribute this to the state’s strong job market, business growth, and family ties that encourage younger adults to stay or return.
The study also noted that middle- and upper-middle-class households make up the bulk of those relocating to Texas. Many are seeking better career prospects, lower taxes, and a more affordable lifestyle compared to coastal states.
Texas’ Growth Outlook
Experts believe that while the pace of growth could fluctuate, Texas remains a powerful draw for Americans seeking stability and opportunity. The state’s economic strength, business-friendly policies, and expanding metropolitan centers continue to make it one of the top destinations in the country.
