St. Paul, MN — Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth has officially announced her bid for governor, becoming one of the most prominent Republicans to enter the race. Her campaign launch on Sunday sets the stage for a crowded primary and a potential challenge to Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, who is seeking a third term.
Demuth shared her decision in a YouTube video, saying she plans to discuss her campaign goals and vision at a press conference scheduled for Monday.
“Minnesotans deserve strong leadership that puts families, safety, and opportunity first,” Demuth said in her announcement video.
A Crowded Republican Field
According to FOX 9, Demuth joins a competitive Republican primary that already includes several notable contenders. Among them are:
- Rep. Kristin Robbins
- Former State Senator Dr. Scott Jensen
- Former MMA fighter Brad Kohler
- Retired U.S. Army veteran Kendall Qualls
- Jeff Johnson, Phillip Parrish, and Thomas Evenstad
The race could grow even more crowded, as MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell recently told the Star Tribune he re-established his Minnesota residency while considering a run for governor.
“I love this state, and I want to see it succeed — that’s what this campaign is all about,” Demuth said during a brief interview following her announcement.
Who Is Lisa Demuth?
Demuth, 51, has served in the Minnesota House since 2019, representing Cold Spring and surrounding areas west of St. Cloud. Over the years, she has emerged as a key figure in the state legislature, gaining attention for her pragmatic leadership style and focus on community-driven governance.
In 2023, Demuth made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve as Speaker of the Minnesota House.
“I’ve spent my career working across the aisle to make Minnesota better for every family — this campaign is an extension of that work,” she said in her announcement.
Her platform is expected to focus on public safety, education reform, and economic opportunity, echoing themes central to recent GOP campaigns in the state.
Gov. Walz Seeks a Third Term
Democratic Governor Tim Walz officially announced in September that he will run for a third term, touting his administration’s record on education funding, healthcare access, and infrastructure. His campaign emphasized continuing Minnesota’s “path of progress” despite national political divides.
The upcoming race is shaping up to be one of Minnesota’s most watched gubernatorial contests, with analysts predicting a high voter turnout and an aggressive campaign season leading into 2026.
The Road Ahead
With Demuth’s entry, Republicans now have multiple high-profile candidates vying for the nomination — a sign of both party energy and potential division. Her campaign kickoff video hinted at a unifying message, calling for “stronger communities, safer neighborhoods, and a government that listens.”
“Minnesota’s best days are ahead of us — we just need leadership that believes in our people again,” Demuth said.
Demuth’s formal campaign launch event will take place Monday morning in St. Paul, where she is expected to outline key policy proposals and her vision for Minnesota’s future.
