Three Dead after Suspected Drunk Driver Runs Red Light in Southwest Houston

Houston, TX – A tragic crash early Sunday morning in southwest Houston has left three people dead, and a driver now faces intoxication manslaughter charges following what investigators describe as a preventable and reckless act.

Fatal Collision in Southwest Houston

The incident occurred just after 1 a.m. near West Orem and Almeda Road, a busy intersection in southwest Houston. Authorities say a gray Chrysler, heading southbound on Almeda, ran a red light with its headlights off and T-boned a white Buick traveling eastbound on West Orem through a green light.

The impact was severe, causing a chain-reaction collision that damaged three other vehicles stopped at the intersection.

Three Victims Killed in the Buick

According to investigators, three people inside the white Buick lost their lives as a result of the crash.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. A third passenger, who was ejected from the vehicle, later died at a nearby hospital, as per the reports.

Officials have not yet released the names of the deceased, pending notification of their families.

Driver’s Blood Alcohol Level “Well Over the Legal Limit”

The driver of the gray Chrysler was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Police confirmed that toxicology reports revealed the driver’s blood alcohol level was well above the legal limit.

After reviewing surveillance footage and test results, Houston police upgraded the charge from Driving While Intoxicated (DWI) to Intoxication Manslaughter.

Investigators say the surveillance video clearly shows the Chrysler driving without headlights moments before it ran the red light, leading to the deadly collision.

Police Urge Safe Driving and Responsible Choices

In response to the tragedy, HPD Sergeant Rebecca Dallas emphasized the importance of making safe transportation choices after drinking.

“We want to keep the streets of Houston safe,” Sgt. Dallas said. “There are ride-share options and other safe ways to get home. If you plan to drink, make sure you have a safe ride so you don’t put other people at risk.”

Authorities are urging anyone with additional video or information about the incident to contact the Houston Police Department as the investigation continues.

Ongoing Investigation

The Houston Police Department continues to gather evidence and interview witnesses to reconstruct the events leading up to the fatal collision. Officials have not yet confirmed when the suspect driver will appear in court.

The department also reminded drivers that intoxication manslaughter is a second-degree felony in Texas, carrying a potential sentence of up to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
