San Jose, CA — A devastating three-vehicle collision in San Jose’s Willow Glen neighborhood over the weekend resulted in one death and another person critically injured, according to the San Jose Police Department.
Deadly Weekend Crash on Foxworthy Avenue
The crash happened on Saturday around 2:35 p.m. on Foxworthy Avenue, just west of Jarvis Avenue, near the southern portion of Willow Glen north of Hillsdale Avenue.
Police say the crash involved a white 2018 GMC Denali SUV, driven by a man, traveling eastbound when the tragedy occurred.
High-Speed Passing Attempt Led to Head-On Collision
Authorities stated that the GMC driver attempted to pass a green 2018 Subaru Forester on the right side of the two-lane road, despite the stretch being marked by a double yellow line.
During this attempt, the GMC struck the Subaru, forcing the SUV into the opposite lane, where it crashed head-on into a blue 2012 Honda CR-V heading eastbound.
The woman driving the Honda CR-V was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man driving the GMC suffered life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition at a local hospital.
The Subaru driver, also a woman, was not injured, police confirmed.
SUV Erupted in Flames, Witnesses Describe the Horror
Surveillance footage from nearby homes showed the GMC bursting into flames immediately after the collision.
Israel Lomeli, a resident who lives near the scene, said the sound was explosive:
“It sounded like a bomb,” he explained to CBS News.
Lomeli told reporters that officers informed him the SUV may have been traveling at nearly 70 mph, more than double the listed 30–35 mph speed limit on Foxworthy Avenue.
He also shared that a witness who arrived shortly after the crash claimed the SUV driver had been arguing with a woman at a nearby 7-Eleven and sped off after her, although police have not confirmed that detail.
Officials did say firearms were found in one of the vehicles, but they were determined to be unrelated to the crash.
Community Says Speeding Is a Persistent Problem
Lomeli noted that the stretch of Foxworthy Avenue has been the site of multiple speed-related and DUI crashes in recent years. He and other neighbors have requested traffic-calming measures, such as speed bumps.
The identity of the deceased woman will be released by the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner’s Office once her family has been notified.
This incident marks San Jose’s 31st fatal crash and the 31st traffic death of 2025, adding to growing concerns over public safety on city roadways.
Call for Action
Residents hope the city will take quicker steps to address the danger on Foxworthy Avenue to prevent another tragedy like this from happening again.
Do you think speed bumps, tougher enforcement, or redesigning the road could prevent future crashes?
