Nashville, NC — A large-scale drug trafficking operation was disrupted after deputies in Nash County discovered over 13 pounds of cocaine during a traffic stop, leading to a second arrest and even more narcotics and cash recovered in Harnett County, authorities announced.

Traffic Stop on I-95 Sparks Major Investigation

According to the Nash County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began around 8 a.m. Monday along Interstate 95 near the 146-mile marker in the Gold Rock area. Deputies stopped a Nissan Altima heading south after witnessing a traffic violation.

While speaking with the driver, deputies said they detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle, prompting a further search. Despite only issuing a written warning for the traffic offense, deputies developed reasonable suspicion of criminal activity.

During the search, investigators located 13.6 pounds of suspected cocaine hidden inside a small suitcase in the rear passenger area.

The driver — identified as Charles Baker, 40, from Washington, D.C. — was immediately arrested and charged with:

  • Two counts of trafficking in cocaine
  • Maintaining a vehicle for the use, storage, or sale of controlled substances

He is being held on a $4 million secured bond at the Nash County Detention Center.

Second Arrest in Harnett County Uncovers More Drugs and Cash

After Baker’s arrest, the investigation expanded, connecting the initial drug load to Harnett County. Deputies there located a 2025 Toyota RAV4 leaving Old Stage Road in the Coats area — believed to be the drugs’ final destination.

A traffic stop resulted in the seizure of $74,680 in cash. Deputies then obtained a search warrant for a home linked to the vehicle.

Inside the residence, authorities seized:

  • 104 grams of cocaine
  • 33 grams of crack cocaine
  • A Smith & Wesson 5.7 pistol

The Harnett County suspect, Fred Douglas Pullen III, was arrested and charged with:

  • Trafficking in cocaine
  • Possession of a firearm by a felon

He remains in custody at the Harnett County Jail on a $125,000 secured bond.

Deputies Say Drug Delivery Was “Looming”

Investigators believe the seizure stopped a major shipment of narcotics from entering the community. Officials said the coordinated arrests prevented an imminent drug distribution operation.

Deputies credited fast communication between agencies for the successful enforcement action.

Community Safety Efforts Continue

Law enforcement agencies emphasize continued vigilance along the I-95 corridor — a known route for drug trafficking across the East Coast.

Authorities have not shared whether additional arrests or charges are expected as the investigation remains active.
