Elgin, OK — A 30-year-old mother of three, a third-grade teacher, has died nearly two years after she was accidentally served a margarita containing industrial cleaner at a local restaurant. Authorities in Oklahoma have now opened a new investigation into the heartbreaking case.
Valentine’s Day Date Turns Into a Medical Emergency
The victim, Holly Hill (30), visited Hacienda Las Margaritas Bar & Grill in Elgin on Valentine’s Day 2023 with her husband. What was supposed to be a romantic evening turned into a horrifying medical emergency.
Instead of a standard margarita, Holly was given a cocktail containing a highly corrosive industrial cleaning solution—a chemical not meant for human consumption.
According to her mother, Kelly Hunter, Holly reacted instantly:
Her mouth felt “on fire”, she began vomiting, and rushed desperately to the bathroom to rinse her mouth.
Doctors determined the drink had burned a hole in her esophagus, causing catastrophic and permanent health damage, as per The Post.
A Two-Year Battle to Survive
For more than two years, Holly endured countless procedures aimed at repairing the severe internal injuries. Despite struggling with constant pain and difficulty eating, she continued teaching and caring for her family as much as possible.
Just days before her death, she underwent another surgery. Her mother shared that:
- The hole in her esophagus remained
- Inflammation had slightly reduced
- A pulmonologist assisted in stitching internal areas
- She still relied on tube feeding
- Another swallow study was scheduled for follow-up
Her obituary captured the strength she displayed:
“For the past two and a half years, Holly faced a long and difficult medical journey.”
Legal Action and Ongoing Investigation
After the initial incident, Holly sued the restaurant due to the lasting health complications she suffered. The case was settled confidentially, according to News 9.
However, following her death last Thursday, law enforcement has reopened the matter.
The Elgin Police Department and the Comanche County District Attorney have now requested support from the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI).
Acting Police Chief Ralph Parsons confirmed that OSBI would conduct an initial inquiry, with local police assisting.
The restaurant has not issued a new statement regarding the investigation, but previously wrote in May 2023:
“We are very sorry for what happened … during these 10 years we have never had a situation like this, a situation that should not have occurred in the first place.”
A Beloved Teacher Mourned by a Community
Holly was a third-grade teacher at Elgin Public Schools, where staff and students adored her. The school superintendent, Nate Meraz, expressed the community’s devastation:
“Holly was a dedicated teacher, Elgin Alumni, and beloved mother and wife.”
Her funeral was held Tuesday morning at the Elgin Schools Performing Arts Center, where friends, family, students, and colleagues gathered to honor her memory.
Calls for Accountability and Justice
The community continues to ask important questions:
- How could such a harmful substance be mistakenly served as a drink?
- Should criminal charges now be considered following Holly’s death?
- Could stricter restaurant safety practices prevent tragedies like this?
Her family hopes the new investigation will finally lead to the accountability they have waited years for.
