Detroit, MI — Residents across Metro Detroit are enjoying a stretch of sunshine and seasonable temperatures as the weekend comes to a close. Following a partly cloudy Saturday, Sunday delivered bright skies and cool fall air, and that trend is expected to continue into early next week.
A high-pressure system located in Canada is firmly in control of the region’s weather pattern. That stable system is keeping skies clear and conditions dry across Southeast Michigan, helping temperatures climb into the mid-50s by late Sunday afternoon. However, many neighborhoods woke up to a frost or freeze early Sunday morning, with temperatures dipping into the 30s before the sun helped warm things up.
The Local Forecast
Here’s what Metro Detroit can expect in the days ahead:
- Sunday Night: Mainly clear, low near 38°F
- Monday: Mostly sunny, high around 56°F
- Monday Night: Clear skies, low near 39°F
- Tuesday: Mostly sunny, high near 55°F
As the week begins, sunshine remains the dominant feature. Monday should deliver another pleasant but cool fall day. By Tuesday and Wednesday, more cloud cover is expected to filter in, though temperatures should still remain near the mid-50s before beginning a gradual decline.
Dry Stretch Extends Through Midweek
The latest forecast changes remove earlier predictions of early-week rain. Instead, the region looks to stay dry through Thursday, as developing low pressure to the northwest tracks farther south than initially expected.
Residents should plan for:
- Increasing clouds late Tuesday into Wednesday
- Mostly cloudy skies on Thursday
- Temperatures slipping to near the low 50s late week
Rain and Cold Return Before Halloween
Rain chances increase again by late Thursday into Friday, just ahead of Halloween celebrations.
High temperatures are forecast to remain near the lower 50s to end the week. Costumes may need extra layers and rain jackets as families head out for trick-or-treating on Friday evening. Early outlooks suggest a chilly and potentially damp Halloween across Metro Detroit.
Hurricane Melissa Undergoes Major Forecast Changes
While Michigan enjoys quieter fall weather, Hurricane Melissa continues to strengthen in the Caribbean Sea and has rapidly intensified within the last 24 hours.
As of early Sunday morning:
- Melissa is a Category 4 Hurricane
- Maximum sustained winds: 140 mph
- Expected to strengthen further within the next 36 hours
Forecast models indicate Melissa may reach Category 5 strength as soon as early next week. The current track calls for a powerful landfall in Jamaica as a strong Category 4 hurricane on Tuesday, followed by another landfall over Eastern Cuba late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.
Hurricane Watches are now posted for portions of Cuba, and officials across the Caribbean are urging preparations.
Community Safety and Preparedness
Even though Michigan is far from Melissa’s impact, many residents have family and travel connections throughout the Caribbean Islands. Keeping an eye on updates will be important as the storm continues to intensify.
Meteorologists will closely monitor:
- Any track changes
- Wind field expansion
- Coastal surge and widespread flooding potential
