4,186 Grams of Fentanyl, 11 Firearms Confiscated by Kansas City Police in Downtown Raid

Kansas City, KS – The Kansas City Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) conducted a major drug raid at a downtown short-term rental on October 16, seizing a record amount of fentanyl along with other narcotics and firearms. Authorities say the seizure could have prevented thousands of potential overdose deaths.

Massive Drug Seizure

During the operation, the Narcotics and Special Operations Units confiscated:

  • 4,186 grams of fentanyl (9.2 lbs.)
  • 64.6 grams of methamphetamine (2.5 ounces)
  • 232.8 grams of marijuana (about half a pound)
  • 786 miscellaneous pills, most containing fentanyl

In addition, officers seized 11 firearms, including two with fully automatic switches. Three individuals have been charged in connection with the case.

Statement from KCKPD

Capt. Shawn Magee of the KCKPD Narcotics Unit called it “our biggest, if not the metro’s biggest fentanyl seizure since we began tracking the drug in late 2020.” He explained to KCTV:

“One kilogram of fentanyl has the potential to kill thousands of people; we seized a little over four kilograms. You don’t need to be good at math to know, this one operation saved a lot of lives.”

The owner of the short-term rental cooperated with investigators and is not facing any charges.

Impact of Overdoses in 2025

The KCKPD Narcotics Unit has handled 79 overdose cases so far in 2025. Tragically, 21 people died, including one child, and six cases involved juveniles.

Police stress that fentanyl remains an extremely potent and deadly drug, and operations like this are vital to protecting the community.

Community Awareness

Authorities urge residents to be aware of suspicious activity and the dangers of illicit drugs. They also remind the public that even small amounts of fentanyl can be deadly, and to seek immediate help in overdose situations.
