Hit-and-Run in Waukesha Leaves Children Injured; Wisconsin Driver faces Criminal Charges

Waukesha, WI — A Wisconsin woman faces serious charges after allegedly striking two children with her vehicle in a hit-and-run incident over the weekend, authorities said.

Incident Details

Zuyelmar Barrios Alvarez, 26, who had recently moved to Wisconsin from Illinois, allegedly hit an 11-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl while they were riding a minibike. Both children were hospitalized, with the boy in critical but stable condition and the girl sustaining minor injuries.

According to a criminal complaint, the boy suffered a serious head injury, two broken legs, a severed fingertip, and was unable to breathe on his own immediately after the collision.

Hit-and-Run Allegations

Barrios Alvarez reportedly left the scene after the collision and returned about two minutes later. Witnesses captured video showing the vehicle driving away before neighbors intervened to assist the children.

She later told police that she was traveling 15–20 mph and did not initially see the minibike. She said she tried to stop and swerve but could not avoid the collision, as per Law&Crime.

Legal Proceedings

Barrios Alvarez was taken into custody and charged with knowingly operating a vehicle without a valid license and hit-and-run causing great bodily harm. Her Illinois driver’s license was invalid in Wisconsin, where she now resides.

At her Monday court appearance, bail was set at $50,000. Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of the incident, citing that she hit the children, drove away, and only stopped after being flagged down by neighbors.

Her next court date is scheduled for October 28.
