Los Angeles, CA – Motorists are being warned to plan ahead as lane reductions take effect on the I-405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass this weekend. The closures are part of the ongoing $143 million I-405 Pavement Rehabilitation Project, which spans between Van Nuys and Westwood.
Lane Reductions and Closures
Caltrans crews will begin work as early as 10 p.m. Friday, October 17, and continue through 5 a.m. Monday, October 20. As per the reports, the drivers should expect the following disruptions:
Northbound I-405
- Reduced to three lanes between Santa Monica Boulevard and just north of Sunset Boulevard
- Santa Monica Boulevard on-ramp closed
- Getty Center Drive off-ramp closed
Southbound I-405
- Reduced to three lanes from just north of Sunset Boulevard to Wilshire Boulevard
- Sunset Boulevard/Church Lane on- and off-ramps closed
- Southbound I-405 off-ramp to Eastbound and Westbound Wilshire Boulevard closed
Alternate Routes

To minimize delays, Caltrans recommends motorists use alternate routes:
- Northbound I-405 via Santa Monica Boulevard: Travel east on Santa Monica Boulevard, then north on Sepulveda Boulevard to the northbound I-405 on-ramp at Moraga Drive
- Southbound I-405 via Sunset Boulevard: Travel north on Church Lane, south on Sepulveda Boulevard, and west on Wilshire Boulevard to the southbound I-405 on-ramp
Safety Tips and Recommendations
Motorists are urged to plan extra travel time, follow posted detour signs, and drive cautiously through the construction zone. Caltrans also recommends using public transportation where possible to avoid congestion.
This weekend’s work is part of a long-term effort to improve roadway conditions, reduce pavement deterioration, and enhance safety for drivers on one of Los Angeles’ busiest freeways. While lane reductions may cause temporary delays, the improvements aim to provide smoother and safer travel in the long term.
