Cascais, Portugal — Authorities in Portugal are investigating a violent attack that left one American tourist dead and another seriously injured early Wednesday in the coastal resort town of Cascais, a popular seaside destination located about 20 miles west of Lisbon.
According to local reports, the incident occurred during an attempted robbery near a busy pedestrian area, shocking residents and travelers in one of Portugal’s most visited regions.
One Tourist Killed, Another Hospitalized
Portuguese police told local media that three suspects carried out the attack before fleeing the scene in a vehicle. The Lisbon Metropolitan Command police force confirmed that one of the victims died at the scene, while the second suffered facial and arm injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.
“One of the young men died at the scene and the other suffered injuries to his face and arms and was taken to [a] hospital,” the Lisbon police said, according to the Portugal Resident newspaper.
Video footage captured by Reuters showed blood stains on a sidewalk, marking the location where the stabbing took place. Witnesses described the attack as “swift and chaotic,” with bystanders attempting to assist before emergency responders arrived.
U.S. State Department Responds
A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department told Fox News that the agency is aware of the incident and has offered assistance to the victims’ families.
“We are aware of reports of two U.S. citizens attacked in Portugal. The U.S. Department of State takes seriously its commitment to assist U.S. citizens abroad and stands ready to provide consular assistance,” the spokesperson said.
The victims have not yet been publicly identified, pending notification of next of kin.
Police Investigation Underway
Authorities said the three suspects remain at large, and a manhunt is underway involving both local and national police. Investigators are reviewing surveillance footage from nearby streets and businesses to track the suspects’ movements.
The Lisbon Metropolitan Command is leading the investigation, and additional security has been deployed in Cascais amid growing concern among residents and tourists.
“We are doing everything possible to identify and apprehend those responsible,” a police official said. “This is a safe area, and incidents like this are extremely rare.”
Tourist Community in Shock
Cascais, known for its beaches, nightlife, and luxury resorts, draws thousands of American and European visitors each year. The attack has unsettled both locals and tourists who frequent the promenade area where the violence occurred.
Local business owners expressed fear that the incident could temporarily affect tourism in what is typically considered one of Portugal’s safest coastal towns.
“People are frightened — this kind of violence doesn’t happen here,” one café owner told reporters. “Everyone is hoping the police catch those responsible soon.”
