Arizona Man Accused of Driving Drunk and High in Crash That Killed 6-Year-Old Girl; Clocked 105 MPH Speed

PHOENIX, Ariz. — Authorities say a 21-year-old Arizona man is facing multiple felony charges after a deadly crash that killed a 6-year-old girl and injured her 2-year-old sister on Sunday night in Maricopa County.

Deadly Crash on the Highway

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS), troopers responded just before 8 p.m. to a violent crash involving a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Tundra pickup truck. Inside the Corolla were five people, including two young children.

The 6-year-old girl died at the scene, while her 2-year-old sister was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Driver’s Dangerous Behavior Before the Crash

Investigators identified the driver of the pickup as Turatsinze Gadi, 21, of Phoenix. Officials say he was driving 105 mph, swerving through traffic before slamming into the family’s car.

Gadi later claimed to police that another driver “brake checked” him — but investigators say that was proven false.

Attempt to Flee and Arrest at Gas Station

Following the crash, Gadi allegedly abandoned his truck at a nearby QuikTrip convenience store. He told police he was “in shock” and didn’t know what to do. He was taken into custody a short time later, according to the reports.

Alcohol, Drugs, and Reckless Decisions

Authorities say Gadi had been drinking beer and tequila while celebrating his girlfriend’s birthday, and also smoked marijuana earlier that night.

Tests revealed a blood alcohol concentration of .219, nearly three times the legal limit. Despite this, Gadi reportedly told officers he only felt “a three or four” out of ten on the intoxication scale.

Facing Serious Charges

Gadi now faces charges including:

  • Second-degree murder
  • Endangerment
  • Aggravated assault
  • Failure to remain at the scene of an accident involving death

During his first court appearance, Gadi tearfully apologized, saying:

“I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

A Maricopa County judge ordered him held on a $500,000 bond. As of Thursday, he remains behind bars.

A Community in Mourning

The tragic crash has shaken the Phoenix community, sparking calls for stronger awareness about drunk and drug-impaired driving.

Law enforcement officials continue to urge drivers to plan ahead, use ride services, and never get behind the wheel under the influence.
