Valley City, ND – A Valley City man is facing multiple charges, including his fourth DUI offense, after allegedly fleeing from police and resisting arrest during an incident on October 7, 2025.
According to the Valley City Police Department, officers arrested Michael Nelson following a brief chase that ended in the parking lot of Valley Bluffs Apartments on East Main Street.
Erratic Driving Leads to Pursuit
The incident began around 7:00 p.m. when an officer observed a gray 2013 Dodge Dart driving erratically on 12th Avenue Northeast. The driver nearly hit a curb before correcting course and making an illegal pass, according to the police report.
When the officer activated his emergency lights, the suspect allegedly sped away, running a stop sign at 12th Avenue Northeast and Main Street. The pursuit continued at low speeds through a residential area before ending at 1053 East Main Street, the location of the apartment complex.
Taser Used During Arrest
Upon stopping, Nelson reportedly resisted arrest, forcing officers to deploy a Taser twice to subdue him. Due to his size, two sets of handcuffs were required to secure him, the report states.
Officers said Nelson showed several signs of intoxication, including slurred speech, poor balance, and a strong odor of alcohol. However, field sobriety tests could not be performed because of his uncooperative behavior.
Threats Made Against Officer
During transport to the Barnes County Jail, Nelson allegedly threatened the officer’s life and repeatedly demanded a lawyer. He also questioned the officer about the “reasonable articulable suspicion” for the initial traffic stop, police noted.
Multiple Felony and Misdemeanor Charges
Michael Nelson has been charged with felony DUI refusal (4th or subsequent offense in 15 years) and terrorizing. He also faces misdemeanor charges of fleeing a peace officer, preventing arrest, and driving under revocation.
Nelson made his initial court appearance on October 8, 2025 as per Valley News Live.
