Durham, NC – A deadly crash occurred Thursday night after a high-speed chase involving the Durham County Sheriff’s Office ended with a vehicle colliding into another car and a power pole, authorities said.
Fatal Crash Details
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, deputies were pursuing a suspect on N.C. Highway 55 around 11:30 p.m. when the vehicle crashed at Riddle Road, striking another car and a power pole.
The pursued vehicle caught fire, and the driver died at the scene, troopers confirmed.
Injuries and Road Closures
An occupant of the other vehicle involved was trapped inside and later transported to a nearby hospital. Officials have not released the current medical status of that individual.
The crash caused power lines to fall, forcing the closure of the NC-55 and Riddle Road intersection through the morning. Emergency crews worked to repair damaged traffic lights and the fallen power pole, with the NCDOT estimating the road would reopen by 7 a.m. Friday.
CBS 17 reported traffic backups extending at least a mile as crews worked at the scene.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to investigate what prompted the high-speed chase, and the Durham County Sheriff’s Office has not yet released additional details.
