Man Asked Drug User to Not Use Drugs in Front of Children; Shot by Suspect in San Francisco

San Francisco, CA – A San Francisco street ambassador was fatally shot last week while walking his daily crime deterrence route outside the San Francisco Main Library, officials say. The victim, 60-year-old Joey Alexander, confronted a man using drugs near the library, prompting a deadly response.

Shooting Incident

According to Urban Alchemy (UA) spokesperson Jess Montejano, the suspect became agitated when Alexander asked him to stop using illicit substances in front of children. “They exchanged some words, [the suspect] pulled a shotgun out of his bag, and shot him in the torso,” Montejano told KRON, a local CW affiliate.

Police have identified the suspect as 42-year-old Edmund Bowen, who was arrested on Saturday and booked on suspicion of homicide. He currently faces a murder charge, according to court records.

About Joey Alexander

Alexander had worked as a UA street ambassador for two years following a 23-year prison term. His brother, Marvin Alexander, told the San Francisco Chronicle that Joey “liked his job” and was dedicated to helping the community.

“You can’t tell nobody what to do, you just ask them,” Marvin said, highlighting Joey’s approach with difficult situations.

UA works in some of San Francisco’s toughest neighborhoods, supporting individuals on the streets and promoting public safety. Alexander’s death has caused concern among fellow UA practitioners, with Montejano stating, “It’s very easy to see themselves in Mr. Alexander.”

Tragic Outcome

Officials reported that the shotgun blast struck Alexander in the leg, leading to its amputation. He later died on Tuesday due to health complications. Close friends described him as a “quiet and humble man who never raised his voice.”

Our ambassadors dedicate their lives to the work of helping those on the street. Joey Alexander gave his life for it,” said San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie.

Community Impact

The incident has left family, colleagues, and the local community mourning the loss of a committed public servant. Marvin Alexander called the tragedy devastating, saying, “One nut comes by and pulls a stunt like that and kills my little brother. It’s just terrible.”
