Salt Lake County, UT – Rowdy Lee Aguilar, now 21, has pleaded guilty to aggravated murder with a mental health condition in the shocking death of 15-year-old Ivan Vetecnik. Aguilar was 17 at the time of the murder on May 26, 2021, and now faces 25 years to life in prison.
Details of the Murder
According to the Salt Lake County District Attorney, surveillance footage shows Aguilar and Vetecnik entering Aguilar’s home at around 10 a.m. on the day of the crime. More than three hours later, Aguilar exited the home alone wearing a blood-soaked shirt and later went to a nearby business carrying garbage bags.
Aguilar’s father discovered part of Vetecnik’s body in a cargo trailer, which reportedly smelled strongly of cleaning agents. Investigators also recovered a bloody leather glove, a knife, and additional body parts behind Aguilar’s home.
Initial Denial and Confession
Initially, Aguilar denied knowing Vetecnik and claimed he was at his girlfriend’s house all day. He also tried to explain cuts on his hands as injuries from preparing ribs for a barbecue. Eventually, Aguilar admitted to the murder, saying, “I did it.” Authorities have not publicly revealed a motive for the attack.
Sentencing Details
Aguilar will remain at a youth facility until age 25 before being transferred to an adult prison to serve the remainder of his sentence. As per Law&Crime, the sentencing is scheduled for December 5.
Family Reaction
Vetecnik’s sister, Samantha VanTreese, expressed her feelings on social media after the guilty plea:
“But at the end of the day no amount of time in prison will ever be enough! He took my baby brother in the worst way possible!”
