Houston, TX – A dramatic police pursuit involving a box truck ended in a crash, gunfire, and the driver’s hospitalization Thursday afternoon in west Houston, authorities said.
Chase Begins
The incident started around 4:10 p.m. near Brittmore and the Katy Freeway when a Harris County Pct. 5 deputy attempted to stop a box truck.
- The deputy had been alerted by a license plate camera that the truck had frequently used the toll road without paying.
- Upon checking the driver’s ID, officers discovered the suspect had multiple felony warrants.
When deputies tried to detain the suspect, he fled, initiating a high-speed pursuit.
Dangerous Maneuvers During Pursuit
During the chase, the box truck collided with several patrol vehicles.
- Lt. Larry Crowson of the Houston Police Department said the driver put the truck in reverse, ramming deputies’ vehicles.
- One deputy fired shots at the truck as his patrol car was nearly pushed over him.
- Another deputy sustained minor injuries when his truck was struck.
A witness reported hearing five gunshots as the box truck rammed law enforcement vehicles.
Crash and Foot Pursuit
The chase ended when the box truck crashed into an apartment complex on Trail Hollow Drive near Memorial.
The suspect fled on foot into the apartment complex and entered a tenant’s unit. Lt. Crowson said the suspect took a knife from the apartment kitchen and cut his own wrist before being taken to a hospital.
Three deputies were treated at a hospital for minor injuries sustained during the collisions.

Authorities confirmed the suspect has an extensive criminal history and at least two felony warrants.
Investigators are reviewing evidence to determine the full sequence of events. The Houston Police Department’s homicide division is also investigating the deputy-involved shooting.
