Monroe County Man Charged After Assault and Dragging of 11-Year-Old Girl

Monroe County, MI — A 35-year-old man is facing multiple charges after allegedly assaulting his fiancée’s 11-year-old daughter and dragging her down the street before sheriff’s deputies used tasers to subdue him.

Deputies Respond to Disturbing Call

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a Newport residence after receiving a 911 call reporting that a man was assaulting his fiancée’s daughter. The caller, who was also the girl’s mother, told dispatchers that the suspect had dragged her daughter from their home and was walking down the street refusing to release her.

When deputies arrived at Cedar Street and Ashlyn Drive, they found the suspect holding onto the child as her mother followed close behind while on the phone with emergency operators.

Suspect Refused to Release Girl

According to investigators, deputies commanded the suspect to release the child, but he refused. At that point, officers deployed tasers to subdue him.

“The suspect fell to the ground, freeing the girl from his grasp,” officials reported.

The girl was safely returned to her mother and treated at the scene by medical responders for minor injuries.

Charges Filed Against the Suspect

The suspect was taken into custody after a brief struggle and later transported to ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital for evaluation of minor injuries sustained during the incident. Following medical clearance, he was lodged at the Monroe County Jail.

Authorities confirmed the man now faces multiple charges, including:

  • Domestic assault
  • Unlawful imprisonment
  • Resisting and obstructing police (several counts)

The suspect’s name has not been released pending arraignment.

Community Shock and Ongoing Investigation

The violent confrontation left neighbors shaken, as many witnessed the disturbing scene unfold on the street. Investigators said the girl was fortunate to have escaped with only minor injuries after what could have been a far more dangerous situation.

A report from FOX 2 Detroit confirmed that deputies’ quick action using tasers likely prevented further harm to the child.

“She suffered minor injuries from the assault and was treated at the scene by medical first responders,” investigators said.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details about the ongoing investigation.
