San Antonio, TX – A Texas mother has been arrested after her two children were discovered unconscious in a hot car on a sweltering late summer day and later pronounced dead, authorities said.
Victims and Arrest Details
Tiona Lasaisha Islar, 28, faces two counts of injury to a child in the deaths of her 6-year-old son with autism, Miyani Islar, and 3-year-old daughter, Sevani Stevenson, according to the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.
Incident Timeline
Sheriff Javier Salazar reported that deputies responded around 3:30 p.m. Saturday to the 7000 block of Chancery Gate after a call about unconscious children.
“The first deputy on scene began simultaneously performing CPR on both children, but unfortunately both were pronounced dead,” Salazar said during a press conference.
Deputies took Islar in for questioning. She told investigators that she brought the children inside the home around 10 a.m. Saturday and believed they returned to the car on their own. She later discovered them unconscious around 3 p.m., brought them back inside, and then called 911.
Authorities Express Doubts
Sheriff Salazar noted there were inconsistencies in her story. The temperature in San Antonio on Saturday was in the low 90s, raising concerns about the prolonged exposure to heat.
Authorities also confirmed prior visits to the home, including interventions by Child Protective Services over concerns of child neglect, though details of those interactions were not disclosed.
Charges and Legal Information
An injury to a child charge is a second-degree felony, punishable by up to 20 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Islar is currently being held at the Bexar County Jail on a $300,000 bond.
