Holbrook, NY – A Long Island couple was arrested after authorities discovered enough fentanyl to kill more than 42,000 people, along with an extensive collection of drugs, firearms, and other dangerous items, in what officials described as one of the largest drug busts in Suffolk County history.

Arrests and Charges

Caleb Moran and Jessica Medina-Rivas, both 28 and residents of Holbrook, were charged with 56 combined counts of New York State’s highest narcotics offenses. During their arraignment, Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney called the operation “a ticking time bomb sitting in the middle of a quiet neighborhood.”

The pair were held on $2 million bail each, facing up to 15 years to life if convicted. Moran is due back in court on October 28, while Medina-Rivas is scheduled for October 27. Both pleaded not guilty to charges of Operating as a Major Trafficker and multiple counts of drug possession and sales.

Massive Drug Seizure

During a raid at the couple’s home on August 22, authorities recovered:

  • 14 kilos of cocaine
  • 12 kilos of methamphetamine
  • 3 ounces of fentanyl
  • Black tar heroin
  • 20 pounds of cannabis
  • Thousands of pills

Authorities also seized two unregistered firearms, bulletproof vests, blenders, digital scales, a pill press, packaging equipment, and more than $118,000 in cash. In addition, investigators recovered “dragon’s breath” shotgun shells, which emit sparks when fired.

Undercover Operations

The investigation unraveled after the suspects sold fentanyl and cocaine to an undercover detective on five occasions over the summer. During one deal, Moran allegedly warned the officer not to sell the fentanyl “pure”, acknowledging that previous batches had already caused overdoses, including a fatality. He reportedly suggested cutting the fentanyl with soap shavings to stretch the product.

Additional Drug Activity

Authorities discovered about 80 pounds of cannabis at a Patchogue motorsports business operated by Moran’s father. While Moran’s father was not charged, police intercepted UPS shipments of cannabis from California destined for the business. Moran’s lawyer confirmed that the elder Moran has fully cooperated with law enforcement and is not under suspicion.

Authorities’ Statements

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina described the operation as “almost incomprehensible” and noted that the seizure represented $2 million worth of illegal product. DA Tierney emphasized that the investigation remains active and additional charges could be filed as evidence is further reviewed.

Community Warning

Authorities stressed the extreme dangers of fentanyl and other narcotics, particularly in unregulated street markets. The case highlights the risks posed by major drug trafficking operations in residential neighborhoods.
