Alabama Man Opened Fire at Medical Helicopter Mistaking It for Drone; Arrested

Autauga County, AL – Court filings are shedding light on a possible motive after a man allegedly fired multiple shots, striking a medical helicopter and one of the medics onboard while it was responding to an emergency call in central Alabama.

Shooting Incident Details

According to authorities, 48-year-old Peter Ellison fired several rounds at what he mistakenly believed was a drone. In reality, the target was a Haynes LifeFlight medivac helicopter.

  • The incident occurred around 4:20 a.m. on County Road 51, where volunteer firefighters had set up a landing zone in an open pasture.
  • As the helicopter arrived, several shots rang out, striking the right-side window of the aircraft.
  • An onboard flight nurse was hit by a ricochet from one of the bullets.

Response by Deputies and Firefighters

Deputies were already en route to assist the helicopter in landing safely. The pilot and firefighters provided information about the approximate location of the shooter, which allowed deputies to quickly locate and arrest Ellison.

  • A firearm was recovered from the scene
  • Ellison was taken to Autauga County Metro Jail and charged with shooting into an occupied vehicle
  • He is being held on a $30,000 cash-only bond

Injuries and Medical Response

  • The injured flight nurse received treatment at the scene
  • The original emergency patient was transported to the hospital by ambulance, instead of air transport, due to the incident

Federal Involvement

The FBI and FAA have taken the lead in the ongoing investigation, and Ellison is facing potential federal charges in addition to the state-level offense, as reported.

Sheriff’s Statement

Autauga County Sheriff Mark Harrell emphasized the severity of the incident, stating that the swift actions of deputies, firefighters, and the helicopter crew were crucial in preventing further injuries or damage.
