Allen County, IN – A man was taken into custody Monday following a high-speed police pursuit that temporarily shut down a road near the Whitley County border.
Road Closure Details
State Road 205 was closed in both directions between McDuffee and Bryie roads, less than a mile from Churubusco. Around 12:30 p.m., Indiana State Police estimated that the closure would continue for several hours.
How the Chase Started
The pursuit began around 9:30 a.m., when Fort Wayne Police officers attempted a traffic stop at Lima and Ludwig roads for a traffic violation. The driver refused to stop and fled the scene.
Police Response
Indiana State Police joined Fort Wayne Police and the Allen County Sheriff’s Department to track the suspect. Several special operations vehicles were deployed. A video shared by a viewer showed the suspect’s car pulled over as eight police vehicles sped by, followed by nine more vehicles further down the road.
The suspect was eventually taken into custody. Authorities could not immediately confirm if anyone was injured or if additional passengers were in the car.
Impact on Local Schools
During the chase, Northwest Allen County Schools placed nearby schools on a “secure action” for about 15 minutes, according to a district spokesperson. This protocol keeps everyone inside the buildings with doors locked while classes continue normally.
Here is the full message sent to NACS families:
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Today several of our schools were notified of a police chase occurring in the area. As a precaution, we placed the schools in Secure. The Secure status lasted 15 minutes. All school operations have now returned to normal.
What is the Secure Action? The Secure Action is called when there is a threat or hazard outside of the school building. Secure uses the security of the physical facility to act as protection. During Secure, all students and staff are brought into the secure building and all exterior doors are locked. Classes are able to continue uninterrupted inside the building.
Respectfully, Northwest Allen County Schools
Police continue to investigate the incident, as reported by WANE.
